The bill is aimed at combating illegal supplies to China.
A bill aimed at controlling the location of artificial intelligence (AI) chips like those made by Nvidia is set to be introduced in the US Congress in the coming weeks, following reports of massive illegal shipments of the chips to China despite export restrictions.
Nvidia chips play a key role in building AI systems, including chatbots, image generators and more sophisticated technologies that could be used in dangerous areas.
However, investigations show that chips continue to make their way to China. Nvidia claims that it cannot track its chips once they are sold. However, according to Congressman Bill Foster, the necessary tracking technology is already built into the chips themselves.
The new bill proposes to develop rules that would require tracking the location of chips in accordance with licenses, as well as blocking their launch if they are used without permission. According to the legislator, cases of smuggling are already happening and pose a threat to national security.
