Ubisoft faces €92 million fine over illegal data collection allegations

Or 4% of annual turnover

Austrian organization NOYB has filed a formal complaint against Ubisoft, accusing the publisher of violating the GDPR.

The reason for this was an investigation that was launched after a Far Cry fan asked Ubisoft to disclose the data it had collected about him. According to NOYB, even in the single-player game Far Cry Primal, the company’s client accessed external servers 150 times in 10 minutes, which the organization calls “secret data collection.”

In this case, the user purchased the game through Steam, but was forced to additionally connect to Ubisoft Connect to verify the license.

NOYB argues that such data processing is illegal without a real need, and consent through the user agreement (EULA) is not enough to legalize such actions. If found to be in violation, Ubisoft could face a fine of up to 4% of annual turnover – approximately €92 million.

The organization demands that Ubisoft change its practices to comply with European data protection laws.
