The Final Chapter: LG Smartphone Updates End Today

It’s no secret that LG once stood among the big names in the smartphone industry — until it decided to step away in 2021. The South Korean tech giant cited the “extremely competitive” nature of the mobile market as the main reason behind its exit.

Looking at today’s landscape, it’s clear that LG wasn’t exaggerating. Even Apple, one of the two dominant players in the global mobile ecosystem, is finding it challenging to keep up with the fast-moving wave of generative AI features and innovations.

After calling it quits, LG cleared out its remaining phone inventory and redirected its efforts toward other growing sectors — including electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, AI, B2B solutions, and even future mobility technologies like 6G.

But despite leaving the smartphone business, LG didn’t abandon its users completely.

⏳ A Final Gift: Android Updates Until the End

The company honored its commitment by promising three years of Android updates for high-end devices launched from 2019 onward. This included phones from the G series, V series, VELVET, and Wing lineups.

Meanwhile, certain 2020 models — such as those in the Stylo and K series — received support for two years , which also comes to an end now.

LG has set a final date for shutting down most of its mobile-related services: June 30, 2025 at 00:00 KST (which translates to June 29, 11:00 AM ET / 8:00 AM PT / 4:00 PM BST / 3:00 PM GMT ).

On this day, several key services will be discontinued:

  • FOTA (Over-the-Air Software Updates)
  • Update Center (Application Services)
  • LG Bridge PC Tool – used for backing up data and installing software updates via USB

This means if you still have pending updates on your old LG device, today is your last chance to install them.

As LG warns:

“Since we’ll no longer offer app updates, any default apps deleted during factory reset won’t be available for re-download.”

🔐 What Happens to Your Data?

LG also confirmed that all personal user data collected through these services will be deleted once they’re shut down. However, some information might be retained in compliance with legal regulations or internal policies , for a limited time.

💡 A Legacy Worth Remembering

Though LG never reached the same scale as Samsung or Apple in smartphones, it certainly left its mark with bold ideas and experimental designs.

Back in 2014, the LG G3 was the first smartphone to feature a QHD display and laser autofocus — both significant innovations at the time.

Then came the LG G Flex and G Flex 2 , curved-screen devices that stood out not just for their design but also for their flagship specs.

In 2020, LG unveiled the LG Wing , a dual-screen device that could rotate into a T-shape configuration. It packed dual compass, acceleration, and gyro sensors to power a unique camera mode called “Gimbal Mode,” mimicking the smoothness of a professional gimbal.

🚪 Out of Phones, But Not Out of Tech

Although LG exited the smartphone race, rumors have surfaced about a potential collaboration with Samsung on an AI-powered smartphone . And while nothing has been officially confirmed, LG continues to impress with new products — like the world’s first 6K UltraFine monitor , or its innovative 3-in-1 projector that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker and LED mood lamp.

So while LG may no longer be making smartphones, its influence in the tech world remains alive and well.
