Tesla Can’t Take Robotaxi as a Car Trademark

Too general a concept

Tesla has been denied a trademark for its cars called Robotaxi, Engadget reports. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) found the term too broad because it describes autonomous vehicles used by other companies, such as Waymo. The ruling gives Tesla three months to file arguments or the application will be rejected.

Robotaxi is the name for the fully autonomous taxis Tesla plans to launch in Austin, Texas, in June. The company has also applied to use the term for its service, which would allow owners to rent out their cars through Tesla’s network, similar to Airbnb. That application is still under review. Additionally, the term Cybercab — the name of a robotaxi prototype unveiled in 2024 — is on hold due to conflicts with other Cyber marks, including accessories for the Cybertruck.

Tesla must provide the USPTO with specific plans, including promotional materials and evidence of the uniqueness of the term. Experts say the denial may not affect the company’s plans, as it can still use Cybercab.
