Tech giant backtracks: Nextcloud Files unblocked

Google reversed its decision to block the Nextcloud Files app from using “All files access” on Android — a move that had crippled the app’s functionality for months. The restriction, first applied in September 2024, prevented users from uploading anything but media files and sparked accusations from Nextcloud of unfair treatment and anti-competitive behavior.

Nextcloud argued that Google’s refusal to grant the permission — which it had used since 2016 — lacked valid justification, especially after months of unreturned appeals. The company publicly criticized Google, drawing parallels between the incident and recent EU fines against Apple and Meta under the Digital Markets Act.

In response to mounting pressure, Google reportedly agreed to reinstate the necessary permissions, allowing Nextcloud to restore full file-syncing features in an upcoming update.

As of now, Google has not officially commented on the initial block or whether it was the result of an error.
