To raise awareness about reproductive health

At a unique event in Los Angeles, students gathered to host a livestreamed “sperm race” created by 17-year-old Eric Zhu to raise awareness of male infertility. Zhu, inspired by claims that sperm counts have declined significantly over the past 50 years, raised more than $1 million to fund the event.

During the race, sperm samples were placed on tiny tracks, and spectators watched the action on large screens through an electron microscope.

Zhu stressed that he is not part of any political movement aimed at increasing the birth rate. Instead, he hopes to encourage healthy habits that improve fertility, such as healthy sleep, diet and avoiding drugs.

The aim was to spark debate about reproductive health, although some scientists still debate whether sperm counts have really dropped so sharply.
