Nintendo Threatens to Brick Consoles for ‘Incorrect’ Use

And hacking

Nintendo has updated its user agreement to include a strict clause: If you hack the console, use emulators, or modify the software, Nintendo can make your console or individual functions “inoperative.” That is, the console can be partially or completely blocked.

In emails to users, Nintendo warned that access to online services (such as the eShop, Switch Online, and digital games) requires accepting a new agreement. It now clearly states that any attempt to circumvent protection, use illegal copies of games, or interfere with the system is prohibited. For violation of these rules, Nintendo reserves the right to disable services or even the console itself.

For users in the UK, the wording is a little softer, but the gist is the same: if games are used illegally, they may stop working. Nintendo has also updated its privacy policy, allowing it to listen in on online chats to ensure compliance and maintain a “friendly environment” in games.
