Microsoft Phasing Out Key Classic Teams Feature Ahead of Full App Retirement
In March 2024, Microsoft initiated an automatic update to transition users from the classic version of Teams to the New Teams app. By May of the same year, the company published a detailed blog post outlining the key differences between the two versions
Support for the classic version of Teams officially ended in October 2024, and the app is set to be completely unavailable by July 1, 2025. In line with this timeline, Microsoft recently announced that it will be removing a significant feature from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal. This “Major change” involves retiring the option to open files in Classic Teams. However, the company has not provided any specific reasons for this decision.
The company notes that this change started rolling out a few days ago on October 15 and will continue until April 30, 2025. The update will be deployed automatically, so no action is required from administrators. However, Microsoft encourages admins to inform users about this ongoing modification. If you have access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, you can view the announcement under message ID MC1058266.
