Microsoft and Intel Clash Again: BitLocker Reboot Issues Spread After Latest Patch Tuesday Update
A new wave of problems has hit Windows users following the rollout of the May 2025 Patch Tuesday update (KB5058379) , with reports of devices stuck in an endless reboot cycle triggered by BitLocker recovery prompts. This issue follows earlier concerns linked to Windows 11 24H2 , where default encryption settings were reportedly causing data loss for unaware users.
After initial investigations, Microsoft identified a conflict between its update and Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) as the main culprit. While a temporary fix was suggested — disabling TXT via BIOS — many users remain frustrated over the lack of prior warnings or clear communication.
Intel TXT is a hardware-based security feature designed to protect systems from malicious software by isolating trusted processes. It works alongside technologies like Intel PTT (essentially a firmware TPM) and Secure Boot to enhance system integrity.
However, in this case, the clash between Intel’s TXT and KB5058379 causes the LSASS (Local Security Authority Subsystem Service) process to crash unexpectedly. Since LSASS plays a key role in user authentication, its failure leads systems into automatic repair mode — and ultimately, a BitLocker-activated boot loop .
Microsoft explains that affected devices may respond in one of two ways:
- Multiple failed update attempts followed by a successful rollback to a previous stable state.
- A persistent reboot loop requiring manual intervention.
Additional symptoms include specific error logs:
- Event ID 20 : “Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update… (KB5058379).”
- Event ID 1074 : “The system process ‘lsass.exe’ terminated unexpectedly.”
Microsoft has acknowledged the severity of the issue and confirmed it’s working on an urgent fix, possibly releasing an out-of-band update , similar to the emergency patch issued for Windows 11 24H2.
