iOS 26 is bringing big changes to your iPhone’s Messages and Phone apps!

A recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed some of the key changes coming to iOS 26, especially in two core iPhone apps: Messages and Phone . These updates are part of Apple’s broader UI overhaul across its operating systems, internally known as “Solarium” , and set to debut at WWDC 2025 in June.

 

🧾 Major Changes Coming to the Messages App

One of the most notable updates is in the Messages app , where Apple plans to introduce two new features:

  • Poll creation : Users will be able to create polls within group chats.
  • Custom chat backgrounds : Users can set background images for individual conversations, which will sync across all participants’ devices.

This means if you set a background image in a chat, the other person will see it too — creating a shared visual experience. These updates appear to be Apple’s attempt to make iMessage more competitive with services like WhatsApp.

 

📞 Minor Redesign for the Phone App

Compared to the Messages app, the changes in the Phone app are more modest. The update will introduce a redesigned interface that combines:

  • Favorite contacts
  • Recent calls
  • Voicemail

…into one scrollable view. This layout is optional, and users will still be able to switch back to the classic interface if they prefer.

The enhancements aim to improve personalization and keep iPhone users within Apple’s ecosystem. By adding features commonly found in third-party messaging apps, Apple hopes to reduce the need for users to switch platforms.

🗓️ When Will iOS 26 Be Released?

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 26 during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025) , starting on June 9 . Alongside iOS 26, Apple may also reveal updated versions of iPadOS 26, macOS 16, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26 — all featuring the new glass-like UI and possibly new naming conventions.
