Google Adds Audio Summaries by NotebookLM to Search Results
Google has announced that its Audio Overviews feature is expanding beyond NotebookLM and will now be integrated into Google Search through a new experiment in Search Labs . This update brings a fresh way for users to interact with search results using voice-generated summaries powered by AI.
🗣️ How Does It Work?
The feature leverages Google’s latest Gemini models to generate short, conversational audio summaries for specific search queries. When relevant, users will see an option to generate an audio overview directly from the search results page.
According to Google, this feature will only appear “when our systems determine it might be useful, ” meaning it’s not available for every query — just those where a spoken summary could add value.
Once you play the audio, you can give feedback by tapping either the thumbs-up or thumbs-down button. The company says this helps improve future responses.
đź”— More Than Just Audio
In addition to the spoken summaries, Google will also include related web links within the audio player interface. This allows users to dive deeper into the subject without leaving the search results page.
To try out Audio Overviews on Google Search, all you need to do is opt in to the experiment via Search Labs .
📌 From NotebookLM to Gemini: A Brief History
For those who aren’t familiar, Audio Overviews was first introduced as part of NotebookLM last year. The tool lets users create AI-powered podcasts and spoken summaries from various content sources like articles, YouTube videos, and even audio files.
It features multiple natural-sounding AI voices that explain topics conversationally — almost like two people having a discussion.
Earlier this year, the feature expanded to the Gemini app , supporting over 50 new languages. And during Google I/O 2025 , the company added customizable podcast lengths, giving users more control over how much they want to hear.
