From Presentations to Videos: Google Brings AI Image Tools to More Users

Google is expanding the AI capabilities of its creative apps with two powerful new image-editing features now arriving in Google Slides and Google Vids — both powered by Gemini. These tools make it easier than ever to modify visuals without leaving the app, using simple text prompts and smart background generation.

Replace Any Background with Just a Text Prompt

The first feature lets you completely swap out an image’s background using a natural language description. To use it, select an image in Google Slides, right-click and choose “Edit image,” or click the “Generate an image” icon. In the side panel, pick “Replace background” and type in what you’d like — for example, “a sunny beach,” “a modern office,” or “a forest at dusk.”

Gemini generates a new background that fits your description while preserving the original subject. This is especially useful for professionals who want to place products in realistic settings, create consistent branding visuals, or standardize team photos with a uniform backdrop — all without needing Photoshop or design skills.

Expand Images to Fit Any Layout — No Stretching Needed

The second tool tackles a common problem: resizing images without distorting them. If you have a portrait photo that needs to fit a widescreen slide, you no longer have to crop or stretch it awkwardly.

Instead, select the image, go to the “Generate an image” panel, and choose “Expand background.” Pick a new aspect ratio — like 16:9 or 4:3 — and Gemini will intelligently fill in the missing areas with a contextually appropriate background. You’ll get multiple options to preview before choosing the best one.

This is perfect for turning small headshots into full-width banners or adapting social media images for presentations, all while keeping the original subject intact and centered.

Rollout Schedule: Who Gets It and When?

The rollout is staggered based on your organization’s release track:

  • Rapid Release domains: Started receiving the update on July 28.
  • Scheduled Release domains: Full rollout begins August 14.

Admins don’t need to take any action — the features will appear automatically once the rollout reaches their domain.

Who Has Access?

These AI tools are available to users with the following Google Workspace subscriptions or add-ons:

  • Business Standard, Business Plus
  • Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus
  • Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium
  • AI Pro, AI Ultra
  • Legacy Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons

Note: Even without a paid Gemini plan, some AI features (like basic background removal in Drawing, Slides, and Vids) are already included in many Workspace plans — part of Google’s push to integrate AI more broadly across its productivity suite.

A Step Toward Smarter, Faster Content Creation

With these updates, Google continues to blur the line between simple editing and intelligent design. By embedding Gemini directly into Slides and Vids, the company is empowering everyday users — from teachers to marketers — to create polished, professional visuals in seconds, not hours.

And the best part? You don’t need to be a designer. Just describe what you want, and let AI do the rest.
