From Asia to Europe: The 10 Cities with the Fastest Internet Speeds

In today’s digital world, having a blazing-fast internet connection is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity. Whether you’re streaming 4K HDR content , gaming online, or simply browsing the web, a fast and stable connection makes all the difference. And with global median internet speeds steadily rising over the past year, it’s worth taking a closer look at which cities are leading the race.

We’ve previously covered which countries offer the fastest internet speeds, but what about the biggest cities in the world? Thanks to Ookla’s latest Speedtest Global Index, we now have a clearer picture of which urban centers are delivering the best broadband and mobile internet performance as of mid-2025.

🏙️ Top 10 Cities for Fastest Fixed Broadband Speeds

Ookla’s data shows that Lyon, France takes the top spot for the fastest fixed broadband speeds, with a median download speed of 347.52 Mbps . Here’s the full list of the top 10:

  1. Lyon, France – 347.52 Mbps
  2. Abu Dhabi, UAE – 344.34 Mbps
  3. Valparaíso, Chile – 330.57 Mbps
  4. Beijing, China – 303.44 Mbps
  5. Shanghai, China – 303.15 Mbps
  6. Bucharest, Romania – 303.07 Mbps
  7. Los Angeles, United States – 293.53 Mbps
  8. New York, United States – 289.56 Mbps
  9. New Taipei, Taiwan – 288.57 Mbps
  10. Bangkok, Thailand – 276.14 Mbps

For users in the United States , Los Angeles and New York are among the best-connected cities. While LA leads in download speeds, New York takes the edge in upload performance — offering 41.15 Mbps , compared to LA’s 23.18 Mbps .

Globally, the median fixed broadband download speed is currently 103.09 Mbps , with uploads averaging 56.75 Mbps . Interestingly, even cities at the lower end of the list like New Taipei and Bangkok offer upload speeds that rival those of Lyon and Abu Dhabi.

📱 Mobile Internet: A Whole New Game

When it comes to mobile internet, the numbers get even more impressive — and the rankings shift dramatically.

Globally, the median mobile download speed is 91.79 Mbps , while uploads average just 13.50 Mbps . But some cities are far ahead of the curve.

At the top of the list is Ar-Rayyan, Qatar , with a stunning 561.48 Mbps download speed — nearly 61% faster than Lyon’s fixed broadband speed.

Here are the top 10 cities for mobile internet performance:

  1. Ar-Rayyan, Qatar – 561.48 Mbps
  2. Doha, Qatar – 532.28 Mbps
  3. Abu Dhabi, UAE – 516.11 Mbps
  4. Dubai, UAE – 474.12 Mbps
  5. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 392.10 Mbps
  6. Skopje, North Macedonia – 347.59 Mbps
  7. São Paulo, Brazil – 344.52 Mbps
  8. Kuwait City, Kuwait – 330.43 Mbps
  9. Sofia, Bulgaria – 320.34 Mbps
  10. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – 317.17 Mbps

It’s clear that Middle Eastern cities dominate the mobile internet rankings — thanks largely to their rapid rollout of 5G infrastructure over the past few years.

Meanwhile, U.S. cities didn’t make it into the top 20, though major hubs like Los Angeles and New York still delivered download speeds exceeding 200 Mbps .

⚡ Latency: Where Fixed Broadband Still Wins

While mobile internet may be faster in some places, wired connections still have the edge when it comes to latency .

Globally, the average latency for fixed broadband is just 8ms , compared to 25ms for mobile connections — making wired internet more responsive and better suited for real-time applications like gaming or video conferencing.

📊 Median Speeds: Why They Matter

It’s important to note that these figures represent median speeds , not peak performance. Ookla explains that median speeds offer a more realistic view of what the average user experiences in real life.

Unlike averages, medians aren’t skewed by a few extreme values — like ultra-fast connections available to a small group of users. So while some people may enjoy gigabit-level speeds, the median gives a better idea of what most people actually get.
