Extreme thirst and other unusual signs that you’re eating too much sugar

They were named by nutritionists

Too much sugar in your diet can lead to symptoms like high cholesterol, excessive thirst, chronic fatigue, tooth decay, and more. Here’s how to tell if you’re eating too much.

Taste bud adaptation . If you eat added sugar frequently, your taste buds will adapt and foods won’t taste as sweet. As a result, you’ll need more and more sugar to feel the same pleasure from eating as before. Plus, the more sugar you eat, the more your brain will become wired to expect it, says Anar Allidina, MPH, a Toronto-based dietitian. Over time, it will be harder to feel happy without sugar.

Sugary foods at the beginning and end of the day . If you wake up and immediately eat something sweet or end your day with sugary foods, you may be consuming too much sugar, says Lisa Andrews, MS, RD, LD, of Sound Bites Nutrition. Baked goods, store-bought coffee drinks, donuts, sports drinks, and other popular breakfast foods can be loaded with sugar.

Intense thirst . It may also indicate type 2 diabetes.

Constant fatigue, even after sleep . Lack of sleep increases hunger and reduces the feeling of satiety.

Increased cholesterol levels . Research shows that high sugar consumption is associated with increased levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol.

More cavities . That’s the warning from Carlette Roberts, BSc, a UK-based dietitian.

Weight gain : High intake of added sugar has been linked to weight gain.
