AMD Ditches Samsung Partnership, Moves Chip Orders to TSMC

Some orders have been transferred to factories in the USA

AMD has abandoned its partnership with Samsung Foundry and moved orders for 4nm chip production to Taiwan’s TSMC. According to available information, some of these orders will be placed at TSMC’s facility in Arizona, USA.

AMD has previously worked closely with Samsung as part of a dual-source strategy. The plan was to use the Korean factory to produce not only EPYC server processors, but also Ryzen APUs and Radeon graphics cards. However, interest in this site is now noticeably weakening. The reasons have not been officially announced, but most likely, it is due to the weak results and limited capabilities of Samsung Foundry against the backdrop of the growing attractiveness of TSMC production lines.

TSMC has been actively developing its American production in recent months, where mass production of chips using the 4-nm process technology is already underway. It is here, apparently, that AMD’s new orders have moved. In addition, the company has already placed orders for “Venice” server processors, which will be manufactured using 2-nm technology. Work is also underway on consumer Ryzen 9000 processors.
