Alpine Linux 3.22 Is Now Available

Alpine Linux 3.22 is officially released, continuing the distro’s reputation since 2005 for being lightweight, secure, and efficient thanks to musl libc and BusyBox.

One of the biggest changes in this version is the switch from Gummiboot to systemd-efistub for handling Secure Boot. The Alpine team made the move after Gummiboot became effectively unmaintained — having been merged into systemd years ago — and started showing issues since 3.21. Don’t worry about systemd creeping in too much; this change only involves the EFI stub component, not the full init system.

For most users, the transition should be seamless, with systemd-efistub installed automatically unless you’ve customized your Secure Boot setup.

Other notable updates include:

  • APK Tools 2.14 remains the last stable version before APK v3 arrives in 3.23.
  • KDE Plasma now supports Wayland only , dropping X11 sessions.
  • nginx is now built with PCRE2 instead of PCRE.
  • Major package upgrades: Linux kernel 6.12 , GCC 14.2.0 , LLVM 20 , and BusyBox 1.37.0 .
  • Some components were removed, including LXD (replaced by Incus), Qt 5 libraries without active use, and pcc and ruby-grpc due to maintenance issues.

You can check the official release notes for more details or follow the upgrade guide if you’re planning to update.
